The Boston Arts Academy summer institute allowed me to steep myself in the company of others who are striving to infuse the arts into the general curriculum. But those three days were really part of a more rarefied atmosphere than the day to day life of an educator. Knowing that arts integration works and truly exists in the world of education keeps me reaching toward that goal, but finding time to create units is very time consuming and requires a delicate balance between creation of my art and the topic at hand. In many ways this process makes me assume the identity of a humanities teacher.
Seemingly, I always feel like I am treading water, to stay afloat!
It is so very helpful to come to the institute at BAA yearly in order create these new units of study.
Next week, I am beginning the unit on Mexican culture that I created as my project as part of the BAA institute. I will begin to check in weekly to reflect on that process...
